You may not even know what is going on when a cavity first begins to take hold. You may notice some sensitivity or bad breath. But it often takes a well-trained eye to see the reality of the situation.
If we detect any cavities or decay in your mouth, we won’t waste any time before we install a simple filling to save your smile and to save your pocketbook from more unpleasant and costly procedures down the road.
For as long as we can remember, dentists have used a mix of mercury and other metals called amalgam for fillings. The effectiveness of such treatments has never been in question. That said, there have been various complaints about the metal itself, over the decades. And that only makes sense.
For one thing, amalgam is not subtle and so it is a stark contrast against your otherwise pearly whites. What’s more, old-school fillings can actually make your tooth more vulnerable to fracture and cause damage to the nearby healthy tooth structures.
Nobody wants to deal with that if they don’t have to.
That’s why our team now uses a newer, safer, and more aesthetically pleasing material for fillings: composite.
Composite consists of a blend of resins that lends itself well to the appearance of your natural teeth. Unlike metal, they will look and feel like they actually belong in your mouth.
In addition to being able to fill a cavity very discreetly, composite resin also has superior bonding properties that allow for much more durability.
Don’t worry, getting a tooth-colored filling is a simple and pain-free experience at our Clearwater practice. We will begin by numbing the area in question. And if you are anxious about the procedure, we have options for relaxing you.
Next, we will clean the cavity by removing the decayed tissue. After the cavity has been cleaned, we will apply the putty-like composite resin material in thin layers. We will shape these layers to match the surface of your tooth.
Lastly, we will harden the resin with a high-intensity light and polish it to match the sheen of your natural tooth. That’s all there is to it. Then you’ll get to take your fresh, clean mouth, and your healthy smile home with you.
This will put you back on the good road in terms of oral health. Don’t put off the restorative care you deserve!
